Nun in Merklingen, ca. 30 km westlich von Stuttgart, wurde eine Kirche als Burg gebaut. Dies geschah im 11. Jahrhundert. Die Kirchenburg war von einem Wassergraben umgeben und über eine Zugbrücke erreichbar. Nach einem Brand 1417 wurden die Kirche und die Burg 1425 erneut aufgebaut. Zwei Mauerringe umgaben die Kirche, ein Steinhaus diente dem örtlichenAdel als Wohnburg.

Castle or Church?
In Merklingen, about 19 mi west of Stuttgart, a church was built as a castle in the 11th century. The fortified church was surrounded by a moat and accessible via a drawbridge. After a fire in 1417 the church and the castle were rebuilt in 1425. Two rings of walls surrounded the church, a stone house served the local nobility as a residential castle.
