Ein Plan, ein Kloster und 20 Sekunden

… konnte ich das ca. 1.200 jährige Dokument sehen – den Klosterplan St. Gallen, entstanden vermutlich zwischen 819 und 826. Warum nur so kurz? Ganz einfach – die auf dem Pergament verwendeten Tinten sind sehr lichtempfindlich. Der Plan hat eine Größe von 112 cm auf 77,5 cm und besteht aus fünf aneinander genähten Teilen, weiße Darmfäden halten sie zusammen. Der St. Galler Klosterplan ist die früheste Darstellung eines Klosterbezirks wie man sich diesen idealerweise vorstellte. Er enthält einen kurzen Text, der wie ein Brief klingt, da er an den damaligen Abt Gozbert adressiert ist. Nur wenige Gebäude aus dem Plan wurden tatsächlich errichtet, so die Kathedrale.

… I could see the approx. 1,200 year old document – the monastery plan of St. Gallen, probably created between 819 and 826. Why only for such a short time? The inks used on the parchment are very sensitive to light. The plan measures 44 inches by 30 inches and consists of five parts sewn together, white gut threads hold them together. The St. Gallen Monastery Plan is the earliest description of a monastery district as it was ideally imagined. It contains a short text that sounds like a letter, as it is addressed to Abbot Gozbert. Only a few buildings from the plan were actually built, such as the cathedral.

    Once again, Sabine, beautiful photos of something extraordinary. My favorite shot is of the choir grid. It has an elegant look with an unusual use of materials.  Thank you for sharing!
