Die Anfahrt von Meereshöhe auf den Gipfel teile ich mir in mehrere Schritte ein: Frühstück auf knapp 1.000 m Höhe, ein erster Stopp auf ca. 2.000 m, dann Stopp beim Visitor Center auf etwas über 2.100 m, dann weitere Stopps an Aussichtspunkten bis ich schließlich quasi über den Wolken bin und auf dem windumtosten, 3.055 m hohen Pu’u ’ula’ula, dem roten Hügel, stehe und einen grandiosen Blick in Richtung Süden und in den Krater des Haleakala, was auf Hawaiianisch „Haus der Sonne“ heißt. Vom Kaupo Gap ziehen Wolken rauf, die leider nicht den ganzen Blick frei geben.

On the “house of the sun”, the Haleakala

I divide the journey from sea level to the summit into several stages: Breakfast at an altitude of just under 3.000 ft, a first stop at around 6,000 ft, then a stop at the visitor center at just over 7,000 ft, then more stops at viewpoints until I am finally virtually above the clouds and standing on the windswept, 10,032 ft high Pu’u ‚ula’ula, the red hill, with a magnificent view to the south and into the crater of Haleakala, which means “house of the sun” in Hawaiian. Clouds are moving up from Kaupo Gap, which unfortunately do not reveal the entire view.
