Der ist zu sehen in der Weite und Einsamkeit des Black Rock Desert in Nevada. Bohrungen Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts hatten gezeigt, dass auch eine Nutzung für die Bewässerung und damit die landwirtschaftliche Nutzung des Gebietes nicht sinnvoll waren. Ein erster Geysir war entstanden. 1964 unternahm eine Firma ca. 32 km nördlich von Gerlach erneut Bohrungen, um Geothermie zu erschließen. Es stellte sich jedoch heraus, dass das heiße Wasser aus der Erde nur 93°C warm war und daher für ihre Zwecke nicht geeignet. Das Bohrloch jedoch ließ sich nicht mehr vollständig schließen und so entstand Fly Geysir, der sich aber auf privatem Gelände befindet.

Side-effect of a drilling

This could be seen in the solitude of the Black Rock Desert, NV. Drilling at the beginning of the 19. Century showed that the water wasn’t suitable for watering the desert to make it usable for farming. This left a first geyser. In 1964 about 20 mi north of Gerlach a company drilled a test well. But the water was only 200°F hot and could not be used for their purpose. The drilling hole couldn’t be closed completely – Fly Geyser was born. It is located on private land.
