Eine schmale Straße führt zur schneeweißen Kirche, der Ermita de las Nieves, auf dem höchsten Punkt Lanzarotes in 650 m Höhe erbaut. Sie ist ein Wallfahrtsort, da hier einem Hirten 1427 die Jungfrau von las Nieves, die Schutzpatronin der Insel, erschienen sein soll. Piraten brannten die Kirche nieder und 1724 wurde sie wieder aufgebaut. Das heutige Gebäude stammt allerdings von 1966. Ich hatte von hier oben einen fantastischen Blick nach Süden zu den Vulkanbergen, die Küste bei Caleta de Famara und El Jable, eine Halbwüste aus hellem Muschelkalksand. In dieser einzigartigen Landschaft hat sich ein besonderer Naturraum mit einer ganz besonderen Flora und Fauna entwickelt.

A narrow road leads to the snow-white church, the Ermita de las Nieves, built at the highest point of Lanzarote at an elevation of 650 meters. It is a place of pilgrimage, as the Virgin of Las Nieves, the island’s patron saint, is said to have appeared here to a shepherd in 1427. Pirates burned the church to the ground, and it was rebuilt in 1724. The current building, however, dates from 1966. From up here, I had a fantastic view to the south toward the volcanic mountains, the coastline near Caleta de Famara, and El Jable—a semi-desert landscape of light-colored shell limestone sand. In this unique landscape, a special natural habitat has developed, home to a very distinctive flora and fauna.
