Das ist schon eine ganze Weile her als in den Ward Charcoal Ovens im gleichnamigen State Park Holz von den umliegenden Bergen. Von 1876 bis 1879 waren die 9,1 m hohen Öfen, die einen Durchmesser von 8,2 m und 0,60 m dicke Wände haben, in Betrieb. Für die Hütte im 3,3 km entfernten Ward wurden täglich 16.000 bushel (falls ich richtig rechnen kann ca. 400 t) Holz täglich zu Holzkohle verbrannt. Nach dem Niedergang der Silbermine in Ward dienten die Öfen Reisenden als Schutz und vermutlich auch Räuber als Unterschlupf.

Charcoal Was Made Here
It was quite a while ago when wood from the surrounding mountains was burned in the Ward Charcoal Ovens in the state park of the same name. From 1876 to 1879, the 30 ft high ovens, which have a diameter of 27 ft and 2 ft thick walls, were in operation. For the smelter in Ward, 2 mi away, 16,000 bushels (about 400 tons if I can calculate correctly) of wood were burned daily to produce charcoal. After the decline of the silver mine in Ward, the kilns served as a shelter for travelers and probably also as a hideout for robbers.
