Auf einer ehemaligen Güterzugtrasse von der Gansevoort Street im Meatpacking District im Süden führt er 2,4 km nach Norden bis zur 34th Street zwischen der 10th und 12th Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen. Aus Sicherheitsgründen, es gab zu viele Unfälle, wurde für die Güterbahn, die die Schlachthöfe und Fabriken verband, eine Hochbahn durch das größte Industriegebiet Manhattans gebaut. 1933 rumpelte der erste Zug darüber. 1980 wurde die Strecke stillgelegt. 2006 begann dann der abschnittsweise Umbau zu einem Park mit Blumenwiesen, Bäumen, Kunst, Plätzen zum Verweilen.

Where Freight Trains Once Ran

is now High Line Park, at an elevation of about 30 ft. On a former freight train track from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to the south, it runs 1.45 mi north to 34th Street between 10th and 12th Avenues in Hell’s Kitchen. For safety reasons, there were too many accidents, an elevated track was built through Manhattan’s largest industrial area for the freight railroad that connected the slaughterhouses and factories. In 1933, the first train rumbled over it. In 1980, the line was shut down. In 2006, the section-by-section conversion into a park with flower meadows, trees, art, and places to linger began.
