Das geht nicht! Doch und zwar in der Nordwestecke des Yosemite National Park. Über die Evergreen Road erreiche ich die Entrance Station, wo ich meinen Day Use Parking Pass (Pass, um während des Tages zu parken) erhalte, den ich beim Rausfahren wieder abgeben muss. Der Weg zur Erkundung führt mich zunächst über den O’Shaughnessy Damm, der nach dem Chefingenieur benannt und der 1923 endgültig fertig gestellt wurde.

Aber der Reihe nach. Bereits 1882 gab es Überlegungen den Tuolumne River zu stauen, um Wasser für die Bay Area zu haben. Nach dem Erdbeben 1906 und den anschließenden verheerenden Bränden in San Francisco wurde der Ruf nach einem zuverlässigen Wasserreservoir immer lauter. Schließlich wurde 1913 ein entsprechendes Gesetz für den Bau des Damms und weiter flussabwärts eines Kraftwerks unterzeichnet. Das Tal, das John Muir als „a grand landscape garden, one of Nature’s rarest and most precious mountain temples“ (freie Übersetzung: „ein großartiger Landschaftsgarten, einer der seltensten und wunderbarsten Bergtempeln der Natur) ging unter und die heutige Schönheit des knapp 13 km langen Sees lässt nur erahnen wie das Tal vorher gewesen sein muss.

Am besten jedoch besucht man Hetch Hetchy im Frühjahr, denn dann haben Tueeulala und Wapama Falls richtig Wasser, jetzt nur der letztere, den ich mir nur aus der Ferne angesehen habe. Außerdem ist es dann nicht so heiß. Gut 4 km in der Sonne bei um die 30°C, nur ein wenig abgeschwächt durch immer mal wieder Wolken, sind für einen ungeübten Wanderer zu weit. Das nächste Mal dann.

 A Visit of San Francisco’s water reservoir

That’s not possible! Oh yes it is in the Northwest corner of Yosemite National Park. Using Evergreen Road I arrived at the Entrance Station where I got my Day Use Parking Pass which I had to give back while leaving the park. My way brought me first to O’Shaughnessy Dam which was completed in 1923 and named after the chief engineer.

 Already in 1882 the valley had been looked at as a potential site for a reservoir. Preservationists led by John Muir wanted the valley to remain untouched. Muir once described the valley as „a grand landscape garden, one of Nature’s rarest and most precious mountain temples“. After the devastating earthquake and fire in 1906 the call for an adequate water supply for the city came up again. Finally in 1913 a law passed congress authorizing the construction of the dam. The valley is now buried under an 8 mi long lake. Seeing its beauty today I only can imagine how it must have been before.

 The best time to visit is spring or early summer when it’s not too hot and when the waterfalls, Tueeulala and Wapama, have plenty of water. As I am not a well trained hiker and due to the high temperatures I only made about a little more than a third of the way to Wapama Falls. But I promised to myself next time I’ll make the entire way to Wapama Falls.
