Siehst Du Cowboys durch die Ebene reiten, Kamerawagen und alles was zu einem Filmset gehört? Nein? Alles ok, denn es ist schon ein paar Jahre her, dass hier in Alabama Hills westlich von Lone Pine am Fuß des höchsten Berges in Kalifornien und der 48 zusammenhängenden Staaten Filme gedreht wurden. Alles begann in den 1920er Jahren, in den 1950ern wurden v. a. B-Western gedreht und in jüngster Zeit Teile von z. B. Gladiator, Iron Man und Star Trek Generations; aber auch Filme wie The Lone Ranger, How the West Was Won.
Und wie kommt diese grandiose Landschaft, durch die Ihr mir gleich folgen könnt, hierher? Nun geologisch besteht sie aus dem gleichen Material wie der höchste Berg, Mount Whitney, und wurde vermutlich bei einem sehr starken Erdbeben heftig durcheinander geschüttelt. Die Gesteine sind – einfach beschrieben – ein orangefarbenes, eintönig verwittertes Vulkangestein, das ca. 150 bis 200 Millionen Jahre alt ist und ein nur 82 bis 85 Millionen Jahre alter Granit, der zu kartoffelförmigen großen Felsbrocken verwittert.

Do you see cowboys riding through the plains, camera trolleys and everything that belongs to a film set? No? That’s okay, because it’s been a few years since movies were made here in Alabama Hills west of Lone Pine at the foot of the highest mountain in California and the 48 contiguous states. It all started in the 1920s, in the 1950s mainly B-Western movies were shot here and more recently parts of Gladiator, Iron Man and Star Trek Generations; and
f. e. The Lone Ranger, How the West Was Won.
And how does this magnificent landscape get here? Well geologically it consists of the same material as the highest mountain, Mount Whitney, and was probably shaken by a very strong earthquake. The rocks are – simply described – an orange, drab weathered metamorphosed volcanic rock which is about 150 to 200 million years old, and a granite, which is only 82 to 85 million years old, which weathered to potato-shaped large boulders.
