Nein, nicht in den letzten Tagen, sondern vor 500.000, 50.000 und ca. 1.000 Jahren. Und das alles mitten in Arizona. Am ersten und letzten Ereignis war ein Vulkan beteiligt, am mittleren ein Meteorit. Vor ungefähr 500.000 Jahren explodierte ein Vulkan, der vermutlich ca. 4.877 m hoch war. Zurück blieb eine Gruppe von Gipfeln, die San Francisco Peaks, deren höchster Gipfel auch der höchste in Arizona ist – Humphreys Peak mit 3.851 m. Der letzte Ausbruch ist vermutlich auf einen Hotspot unter Arizona zurückzuführen (üblicherweise treten Vulkane an Plattengrenzen und nicht auf einem Plateau auf). Asche und Schlacke flogen in die Luft und bildeten Kegel, die östlich und nördlich der San Francisco Peaks liegen. Sunset Crater ist der höchste.

Und was geschah vor 50.000 Jahren? Nun, da raste ein Meteorit mit ca. 42.000 km/h auf die Erde zu, schlug im heutigen Arizona ein und schuf einen 213 m tiefen Krater mit 1,2 km Durchmesser.

No, not during the last few days, but 500.000, 50.000 and about 1.000 years ago. And all this happened in Arizona. The first and last event were caused by a volcano, the second by a meteorite. About 500.000 years ago a volcano which could have had a height of about 16.000 ft exploded. The rest of it is todays San Francisco Peaks with Arizonas highest mountain – Humphreys Peak, 12.635 ft. The last eruption is the result of a hotspot located in this area. Ash and cinder was thrown into the air and formed many cinder cones east and north of the San Francisco Mountains – Sunset Crater is the highest.

And what happened 50.000 years ago? A meteorite hit the earth with a speed of estimated 26.000 mph creating a crater 700 ft deep and over 4.000 ft across.
